Apparently, IBM lawyers found that a company had already trademarked SEQUEL for something, so they got the named changed to “Structured Query Language”, or SQL. But you can see that the “Structured” was intended to apply to “English”, and that it was a language for specifying (database) queries in “Structured English”.
