How do you make a key work?
How does a key actually work?
When the correct key slides into a lock, the pointed cuts on the blade allow the pins to move up and down until they are lined up along track that's called a shear line. When all the pins are synchronized with the shear line, they can turn and the lock will open.
Why does a key fit but not turn?
If the key won't turn in the door lock, the problem could be dirt or dust in the cylinder causing the pins to be stuck in a partially raised position. If that's the case, it may be an easy fix. You can spray dry lubricant into the keyway and then insert the key a few times to get the lubricant working.
Why does my house key not work?
Spray the Lock with Lubricant to Remove Dirt and Dust If that is the problem, it is easy to fix. You can spray a little dry lubricant in the lock to free up the plug so you can open the door. Spray lubricant in the keyway and insert the key a few times so the lubricant can get worked into the mechanism.
