How do multi key locks work?
Can one key open multiple locks?
In short, a master key system allows one keys to open multiple different locks. At the same time, more than one key can open the same lock. In an office building, for example, each employee can have their own key which unlocks the door to their office.
How does the lock and key system work?
The spring and upper pins are fully extended and the pin tumblers are aligned inside the barrel of the lock. When a key is inserted into the lock they press against the pin tumblers forcing them into the upper chamber pins and compressing the springs. They pins are then pushed to align flush with the shear line.
What is a master keyed lock?
In a Master Keyed system, a master key opens all the locks in the system although each lock also has its own unique key. This permits organizing master key systems along departmental or other functional lines to allow supervisory or emergency access.
