Although we can create External Data Sets in Excel that pull information from a SQL Server Database there are times when you want to check a value or lookup a value from an underlying SQL Server database directly from an Excel formula. Using VBA we can do this!
What is SQL in VBA?
SQL is your back end language, VBA is how you organize and display it. If you start with SQL, you can also decide to use PHP, Javascript, or any HTML Application really. I started building workbooks with VBA, and by necessity had to write SQL scripts for the data retrieval.
Is VBA and SQL same?
While Visual Basic (VBA is an implementation of Visual Basic) is a general-purpose scripting programming language, SQL is a special-purpose programming language- aimed at running queries and CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations on relational databases such as MySQL, MS SQL, Oracle, MS Access etc.
Can Excel run SQL query?
Open an SQL connection to an Excel file Before running an SQL query, you have to open a connection with the Excel file you want to access. To establish the connection, create a new variable named %Excel_File_Path% and initialize it with the Excel file path.
