Does Oracle need client?
You don't need to have an Oracle Client installed on your machine to use Oracle SQL Developer. Everything you need to connect to Oracle Database is provided by the JDBC driver included with the download.
What is the difference between Oracle client and Oracle Database?
A database server is the Oracle software managing a database, and a client is an application that requests information from a server. Each computer in a network is a node that can host one or more databases. Each node in a distributed database system can act as a client, a server, or both, depending on the situation.
Is Oracle client required for ODBC connection?
Instant Client ODBC requires the Oracle Instant Client Basic or Basic Light package (depending on your locale requirements) also be installed.
Does JDBC require Oracle client?
The JDBC Thin driver does not require Oracle client software to be installed, but does require the server to be configured with a TCP/IP listener. We recommend all of our customers to use JDBC Thin driver as most of the new features are developed only on JDBC Thin driver.
